11일(수) 달라스 한인타운 한복판에 위치한 ‘헤어월드’ 총기난사 사건에 달라스 한인사회는 충격과 공포에 휩싸였다.
달라스 한인상공회의 김현겸 회장은 한인 상권의 안전을 보장할 수 있는 특단의 조치를 취해달라고 달라스 경찰국에 강력히 촉구했다.
김현겸 회장은 성명서에서 “오후에(2022 년 5월 11일(수) 오후 2시 30분 경 ) 발생한 사건으로 손님을 포함해 3명이 부상을 입은 무차별 총격사건이 발생했다. 총격범은 헤어월드 반대편에서 길을 건너 미용실로 진입했고 총격후 차량을 몰고 도주했다. 달라스 경찰국은 신원을 알수 없는 흑인이라고 발표했고 아직 범인이 잡히지 않은 상황임에도 달라스 경찰국은 이번 총격사건이 아시안 증오범죄라는 징후는 없다고 했다. 하지만 한인들의 반응은 경찰입장과 다르다“며 한인상권의 불안감을 해소하기 위해서라도 보안강화가 필요하다고 강조했다.
김 회장은 이어 “코리아 타운이라 불리는 로얄레인 상권은 한인은행과 한국식당, 소규모 사업장이 모여있는 곳으로 한인 상공회는 그간 달라스 경찰국 및 지역관할 북서부 경찰서와 긴밀한 협조로 한인상권의 치안안전을 위해 공조해왔다”면서 “오는 6월 2일 14년째 이어오는 달라스 경찰국과 큰 행사를 앞두고 있는 상황에 강력범죄가 발생했다. 아시안 혐오범죄인지 여부를 분명히 밝히고 한인상권의 안전을 보장하는 특단의 조치를 취해달라”고 목소리를 높였다.
달라스 한인상공회는 달라스 경찰국을 향해 “상시 스카이와치를 한인상권에 설치하고 정기적 순찰을 강화하고 홈리스 퇴치 및 지역청결을 유지할 수 있도록 조치해달라”고 요구하고 있다.

In response to yesterday’s mass shooting that happened at the Korean Beauty Salon “Hair world” on Royal Lane (known as K-Town), the heart of Korean Town, we, the Greater Dallas Korean American Chamber of Commerce, urge the Dallas Police Department and the City of Dallas to ensure the public safety of the merchants of those who are doing business in the Korean area.
Yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, May 11, 2022 around 2:30 p.m.) there was an indiscriminate shooting that resulted in no loss of life but the injuries of 3 people, including guests. The shooter crossed the street from the other side of Hair World and entered the beauty salon, and after the shooting, he drove his vehicle away. The Dallas Police Department is analyzing surveillance cameras installed around the area to identify the shooter who fled in a minivan, an unidentified black man. The Dallas Police Department says there are no indications that the shooting has to do with an Asian hate crime, but the reaction of Koreans is different from the police’s position.
Not only those in Dallas, but also the Korean-Americans who have heard the bad news, are shocked by the shootings and say they should keep the possibility of Asian hate crimes open and investigate.
Lots of Korean American bankers, Korean food restaurants and small-sized businesses with korean owners are doing their business on Royal Lane, known as K-town, and we, the Greater Korean American Chamber of Commerce, have been working closely with the Dallas Police Department and the Northwest Police Department under its local jurisdiction to ensure the security of the Korean Impression Circle.
However, ahead of the big event with the Dallas Police Department, which is celebrating its 14th anniversary on June 2, please clarify whether the situation is a violent crime or a hate crime and take extraordinary measures to ensure the safety of the Korean Impression Rights.
