Taylor High School launches first credit-bearing Korean language course with 30 non-heritage students

Samsung’s semiconductor investment and expanding Korean business presence strengthen cultural and educational partnerships in Central Texas

GEORGETOWN, Texas (TexasN) — Williamson County has officially proclaimed October 9, 2026, as Hangul Day, recognizing the historical significance of the Korean alphabet and the growing economic, educational and cultural ties between South Korea and Central Texas.

The Williamson County Commissioners Court adopted the proclamation Tuesday, October 13, following a presentation by a local community delegation led by William Kil, vice president of the Foundation for Korean Language and Culture in the USA.

The proclamation was approved after a correction to its heading to ensure the proper spelling of Hangul, the Korean writing system.

The resolution, signed by Williamson County Judge Steven Snell, recognizes Hangul’s scientific design, accessibility and historical contributions to literacy while highlighting the expanding Korean business community and educational partnerships throughout the county.

According to the proclamation, Hangul was created in 1443 by King Sejong the Great and officially promulgated in 1446 to provide a writing system that ordinary people could learn and use.

The county described Hangul as a historic achievement in cultural identity, education and linguistic innovation, emphasizing its role in promoting literacy and cross-cultural communication.

This year’s recognition carries additional historical significance. The year 2026 marks the 580th anniversary of the promulgation of Hunminjeongeum, the original name of the Korean writing system, and the centennial of the first organized Hangul Day observance in 1926, originally known as Gagyanal.

Samsung’s Semiconductor Investment Strengthens Korea–Williamson County Ties

A central element of the proclamation is Williamson County’s growing economic relationship with South Korea, particularly through Samsung Electronics’ major semiconductor investment in Taylor.

The resolution specifically acknowledges Samsung’s semiconductor fabrication facilities and the increasing presence of Korean supply chain partners establishing operations in Williamson County.

These investments have helped position Central Texas as an increasingly important center for advanced manufacturing, international commerce and technological innovation.

The county also recognized that the expansion of Korean businesses is creating opportunities for cultural exchange, educational partnerships and workforce development.

As Korean companies establish a stronger presence in the region, communication skills and cultural understanding have become increasingly relevant to local schools, businesses and communities.

The proclamation describes the county’s growing relationship with South Korea as an important example of international cooperation that extends beyond economic development.

Taylor High School Introduces First Credit-Bearing Korean Language Course

One of the most significant educational developments highlighted in the proclamation is the introduction of Korean language instruction at Taylor High School.

Beginning in the fall 2026 semester, the school launched its first regular, credit-bearing Korean I course, enrolling 30 students who are not of Korean heritage.

The program was established with assistance and support from the Foundation for Korean Language and Culture in the USA, a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding Korean language and cultural education in American public schools.

The county recognized the new course as an important educational milestone, providing students with opportunities to develop foreign language proficiency, cultural competency and skills relevant to an increasingly international workforce.

The program also reflects the changing educational needs of the Taylor community as Samsung and its Korean business partners expand their operations in the region.

By incorporating Korean language instruction into the regular high school curriculum, Taylor High School is helping students explore new academic and potential career opportunities connected to the area’s growing semiconductor industry.

The initiative represents a notable example of how international business investment can contribute to local educational development.

County Recognizes Korean American Community and International Partnerships

The proclamation also expresses appreciation for the contributions of Korean businesses and Korean American residents to Williamson County’s economic and cultural development.

County officials emphasized that recognizing Hangul Day symbolizes mutual respect, international cooperation and the importance of building lasting relationships among communities.

The resolution states that designating Hangul Day reflects the county’s appreciation for its expanding Korean business community, including companies already operating locally and those relocating from South Korea.

It also acknowledges the importance of fostering goodwill among Korean American residents and the broader Williamson County community.

The Commissioners Court formally declared:

“NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Commissioners Court of Williamson County, Texas, does hereby officially proclaim October 9, 2026, as HANGUL DAY in Williamson County.”

The resolution further encourages residents, educators and businesses to participate in celebrating Korean cultural heritage, educational progress and international friendships.

Williamson County’s proclamation follows a similar declaration issued by Austin Mayor Kirk Watson on October 9, officially recognizing Hangul Day in the City of Austin.

While Austin’s proclamation emphasized the Korean American community’s contributions to arts, education, innovation and civic life, Williamson County’s resolution places particular emphasis on the region’s semiconductor industry, Korean business investment and the expansion of Korean language education in public schools.

Together, the two proclamations reflect the growing recognition of Korean language and culture across Central Texas, where economic partnerships with South Korea are increasingly influencing local education and community development.

The official recognition of Hangul Day also establishes a foundation for continued cooperation among local governments, educational institutions, Korean businesses and community organizations.
