휴스턴시, ‘4월 10일 한인상공회의소의 날’ 선포 … 한인상공인의 지역사회 기여 공식 인정

[휴스턴=텍사스N)] 미국 텍사스주 휴스턴시가 한인 경제단체의 지역사회 기여를 공식적으로 인정하며 특정 기념일을 선포했다.

휴스턴시는 존 휘트마이어(John Whitmire) 시장 명의의 선포문(Proclamation)을 통해 오는 4월 10일을 ‘휴스턴 한인상공회의소의 날(Korean American Chamber of Commerce of Houston Day)’로 지정했다. 선포문에 따르면 휴스턴시는 한인 커뮤니티가 도시의 경제 성장과 문화적 다양성, 국제 교류 확대에 중요한 역할을 해왔다고 평가했다. 특히 휴스턴이 미국 내 대표적인 글로벌 도시로 자리매김하는 과정에서 한인 사회의 기여가 컸다고 강조했다.

휴스턴 한인상공회의소(Korean American Chamber of Commerce of Houston)는 1974년 설립된 이후 한인 기업 지원과 창업 활성화, 경제 발전 촉진 등에 기여해온 대표적인 경제단체다. 시는 해당 단체가 한·미 간 무역 및 투자 확대에 중추적인 역할을 해왔으며, 지역 경제와 국제 비즈니스 연결을 강화하는 데 중요한 가교 역할을 수행해왔다고 밝혔다.

The City of Houston has formally recognized the economic and civic contributions of the Korean American business community, proclaiming April 10, 2026, as “Korean American Chamber of Commerce of Houston Day.”

Mayor John Whitmire issued the proclamation this week, citing the longstanding role of the Korean American Chamber of Commerce of Houston (KACCH) in strengthening the region’s business ecosystem and advancing international trade ties.

Founded in 1974, KACCH has served as a key platform for Korean American entrepreneurs and companies, supporting business development, fostering investment, and facilitating cross-border commerce between Houston and South Korea. City officials noted that the organization has helped position Houston as a globally connected economic hub by promoting collaboration across industries and cultures.

The proclamation highlights Houston’s status as one of the most diverse and internationally engaged cities in the United States, underscoring the Korean American community’s role in driving economic growth, cultural vitality, and global engagement.

It also points to South Korea as one of Houston’s leading international trading partners, emphasizing the importance of sustained economic and diplomatic ties. KACCH’s efforts to bridge local and international business networks were specifically recognized as contributing to the city’s expanding global reach.

“Houston proudly commends the Korean American Chamber of Commerce of Houston for its dedicated work and enduring contributions,” the proclamation states.

While proclamations do not carry legal authority, they are among the highest forms of civic recognition issued by the mayor’s office, often signaling strong institutional support and public acknowledgment of an organization’s impact.
