President Jinman Han: “Operational Readiness by Year-End, Taylor Confirmed as Production Hub for Tesla’s AI5 & AI6 Chips”
$33 Billion Economic Impact for Williamson County; Political, Business, and Korean Community Leaders Gather to Celebrate
[TAYLOR = TexasN] The endless cornfields of Central Texas have been fully transformed into a “Chip Field,” the new beating heart of the global semiconductor industry.
On Friday, April 24, at 10:00 AM, Samsung Electronics held a historic Equipment Kick-off ceremony at its new foundry fab in Taylor, Texas. Beyond the mere installation of machinery, this event served as a monumental milestone, signaling that the Taylor plant has moved past the construction phase and is officially transitioning into “Production Mode.”
President Jinman Han “Tesla is a True Partner in the AI Era… Grateful for Advance Purchase Commitments”
During his welcoming remarks, Jinman Han, President and Head of Samsung Electronics Foundry Business, emphasized the strategic partnership with Tesla, expressing profound gratitude. “Tesla is a true partner in the AI era,” President Han stated. “Chips and wafers for Tesla will begin coming out of this facility as early as next year, and we are all looking forward to that milestone.”
He particularly highlighted Tesla’s commitment to the project: “Tesla’s decision to utilize our first Taylor fab for the production of AI5 and AI6 chips, along with their advance purchase commitments, has provided extra ‘horsepower’ to this entire project. We thank you for the trust you have placed in us, and Samsung will prove that trust through results.”
“The Only 2nm Process in the U.S… A Miracle Built on Day-and-Night Dedication”
President Han spoke in detail about the technological superiority of the Taylor plant and the hard work of the employees. “Since we broke ground in the first half of 2022, we have worked day and night to turn a blueprint into a physical reality. Today, we have finally reached the major milestone of equipment move-in,” he said. “This site will showcase Samsung Foundry’s cutting-edge 2-nanometer (nm) process—the only one of its kind in the U.S.—creating opportunities for next-generation products in AI, High-Performance Computing (HPC), robotics, and space applications.”
He also paid tribute to the transformation of the site: “What used to be a cornfield is now a ‘Cradle of Chips’ thanks to your dedication. Our construction, equipment, and civil engineering partners, along with Samsung employees, have been the engine driving this dream.”
$33 Billion Economic Impact; Full Support from Texas Government and Korean Community
BonYoung Koo, Corporate President of Samsung Electronics Taylor, shared the impressive achievements of the past four years. “Since starting construction in 2022, this venture has pumped nearly $33 billion (approx. 48 trillion KRW) into the regional economy and created thousands of jobs,” he explained.
The ceremony saw high-profile attendance, including a video message from Governor Greg Abbott. Officials from Williamson County, the City of Taylor, and the Taylor Independent School District were present, alongside prominent leaders of the Korean-American community, including Jong-gyu Nam (President of the Austin Korean Chamber of Commerce) and Suzi Kang (President of the Korean American Association of Austin). The attendees expressed immense pride in Samsung’s dual-campus operation in Austin and Taylor, which serves as a backbone for the local community.
“Quality First, Safety First… From the Lone Star to the Stars Above”
Extending thanks to global partners such as ASML, Lam Research, and Applied Materials, President Han noted, “Extremely sophisticated tools, including the high-value EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) machines, will be the key catalysts elevating our semiconductor technology. Moving forward, our single priority is ‘Quality and Safety First’ to ensure this installation translates smoothly into successful mass production.”
Samsung Electronics plans to have the fab fully operational by the second half of this year, aiming for full-scale mass production by 2027. President Han concluded with an inspiring vision: “I hope the story we are building here in Taylor sends ripples of innovation across the globe. From the Lone Star State to the stars above, let’s blaze this trail together.”
