The proclamation recognizes South Korea’s growing ties with Houston and the contributions of the city’s Korean American community.
HOUSTON, Texas — Houston Mayor John Whitmire has officially proclaimed Oct. 3, 2026, as Korean National Foundation Day, recognizing the city’s longstanding relationship with South Korea and the contributions of Korean Americans across the Houston area.
The proclamation honors Gaecheonjeol, a national holiday commemorating the founding of the Korean nation and celebrating its history, culture and national identity.
In the declaration, Whitmire highlighted the growing relationship between Houston and South Korea, citing cooperation in business, education, cultural exchange and investment.
The city also recognized the work of Kyung-Eun Lee, South Korea’s consul general in Houston, and the Consulate General’s efforts to strengthen ties between the two communities.
Houston is home to an established Korean American community whose members have contributed to the city’s economy and cultural life through business, education, philanthropy and community service, according to the proclamation.
The declaration also points to expanding economic ties between Houston and South Korea, including trade, investment and business partnerships that continue to create opportunities for both communities.
City officials said those connections reflect a relationship that extends beyond commerce, bringing people together through cultural programs, educational exchanges and community involvement.
In the proclamation, Whitmire said Houston joins the South Korean Consulate General and the Korean American community in celebrating the occasion and recognizing the enduring friendship between Houston and South Korea.
The mayor extended his best wishes to the people of South Korea and the Korean American community for continued peace, prosperity and friendship.
The designation formally recognizes the Korean national holiday in Houston and acknowledges the role of the Korean American community in the city’s growth and diversity.
