프리지데어 미니냉장고 리콜 ‘총 96만 4천대’ … 화재 신고 잇따라

미국에서 판매된 프리지데어(Frigidaire) 브랜드 미니냉장고에 대한 리콜이 대폭 확대됐다. 화재 발생 사례가 추가로 보고되면서 리콜 대상 제품은 총 96만 4천 대에 달한다.

미국 소비자제품안전위원회(CPSC)는 캐나다 가전 유통업체 커티스 인터내셔널(Curtis International)이 프리지데어 미니냉장고 약 33만 대를 추가로 리콜한다고 밝혔다. 이는 지난해 약 63만 4천대의 미니냉장고를 리콜한 데 이은 조치다.

소비자제품안전위원회에 따르면 해당 제품들은 내부 전기 부품이 단락을 일으켜 냉장고 외부에 사용된 플라스틱에 불이 붙을 가능성이 있으며, 이로 인해 화재나 화상 위험이 발생할 수 있다.

이번에 추가로 리콜된 제품은 모델 번호 EFMIS121로, 미국 내에서 타깃(Target) 매장을 통해서만 판매됐다. 현재까지 이 모델과 관련해 재산 피해를 동반한 화재 신고 6건이 접수된 것으로 파악됐다.

앞서 지난해 리콜된 63만4천 대의 미니냉장고는 모델 번호 EFMIS129, EFMIS137, EFMIS149, EFMIS175이며, 당시 과열·용융·화재 발생 사례 26건과 함께 연기 흡입으로 인한 부상 사례 2건도 보고됐다.

AP통신은 이번 리콜과 관련해 타깃과 커티스 인터내셔널 측에 추가 입장을 요청했다고 전했다.

CPSC와 제조사는 리콜 대상 미니냉장고를 보유한 소비자들에게 즉시 사용을 중단할 것을 당부했다. 환불을 받기 위해서는 커티스 인터내셔널 웹사이트를 통해 절차를 진행해야 하며, 제품의 전원 코드를 절단한 뒤 냉장고 전면에 유성 마커로 ‘RECALL(리콜)’이라고 적고, 해당 사진을 회사 측에 제출해야 한다.

커티스 인터내셔널에 따르면 이번에 리콜된 제품들은 2020년 1월부터 2023년 12월 사이에 제조됐다. 추가 리콜 대상인 EFMIS121 모델은 매장 및 온라인을 통해 약 30달러에 판매됐으며, 지난해 리콜된 모델들은 월마트와 아마존 등에서 36~40달러에 판매된 것으로 나타났다.

커티스 인터내셔널은 프리지데어 일부 제품을 포함해 다양한 가전과 전자제품의 제조·유통 라이선스를 보유하고 있다. 다만 프리지데어 브랜드 자체는 스웨덴 기업인 일렉트로룩스(Electrolux Group)가 소유하고 있다.

A recall of Frigidaire-branded minifridges sold in the United States has expanded to approximately 964,000 unitsfollowing multiple reports of fires. Canada-based distributor Curtis International announced an additional recall of about 330,000 units this week, on top of 634,000 minifridges recalled last year, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The recalled products contain electrical components that can short circuit and ignite the plastic housing, posing fire and burn hazards. The newly recalled model, EFMIS121, was sold exclusively at Target for about $30. Six fires resulting in property damage have been linked to this model so far.

Previously recalled models include EFMIS129, EFMIS137, EFMIS149, and EFMIS175, which were sold at retailers such as Walmart and Amazon. Those products were associated with 26 incidents of overheating, melting, or fire, as well as two smoke inhalation injuries.

Consumers are urged to stop using the recalled minifridges immediately and contact Curtis International to request a refund. To qualify, owners must cut the power cord, write “RECALL” on the front of the unit, and submit photos to the company. The recalled products were manufactured between January 2020 and December 2023.
